The library community at-large and the Monroe County Library System specifically, has always stood for the free exchange of ideas and dialogue of important issues.
MCLS continually strives to achieve our mission to enrich the quality of life for all residents by providing free access to informational, educational, and recreational resources.
During the June 2020 Board of Trustees meeting MCLS joined with libraries around the nation to sign the Urban Library Council’s statement on Racial and Social Equality. To date, approximately 170 public libraries have signed the document which states in part:
Libraries are working to achieve equity in the communities we serve by:

Eliminating racial and social equity barriers in library programs, services, policies, and practices

Creating and maintaining an environment of diversity, inclusion, and respect both in our library systems and in all aspects of our community role

Ensuring that we are reaching and engaging disenfranchised people in the community and helping them express their voice

Serving as a convener and facilitator of conversations and partnerships to address community challenges

Being forthright on tough issues that are important to our communities

The Monroe County Library System continues to promote diversity, tolerance, and acceptance in our collection, programming, and staff interactions. Libraries serve as a haven for all people to learn, explore, and grow in the knowledge that they are safe and respected.
