Bringing Outdoor Musical Instruments to the Library

The Monroe County Library System has been awarded $73,800 to permanently install outdoor musical instruments at six library branches. These interactive musical play spaces will enhance community engagement across Monroe County.

“We are excited to bring these unique musical experiences to multiple library branches,” said library director, Nancy Bellaire. “These musical gardens will transform library grounds into interactive destinations where residents of all ages can explore music, play together, and enjoy outdoor learning opportunities.”

About the Instruments

A total of 26 instruments will be installed at the Ellis Library & Reference Center in Monroe and at the Carleton, Erie, Frenchtown-Dixie, Newport, and Rasey Memorial Branch Libraries. This project is supported with funds from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation in collaboration with The Library Network, Woodlands Library Cooperative, and Suburban Library Cooperative.

Creating Musical Gardens

Designed to be accessible, engaging, and welcoming to people of all ages and abilities, the outdoor musical gardens will create new opportunities for recreation, learning, creativity, and social connections in library spaces. The instruments will be installed in outdoor spaces that are accessible to patrons using strollers, wheelchairs, and other mobility devices. By providing free opportunities for creative play and exploration, this project reflects the library’s ongoing commitment to serving all residents.

In addition to encouraging outdoor recreation, the musical installations will complement existing library programming such as literacy initiatives, early childhood learning programs, and STEM activities. It also highlights the library’s role as a community hub by creating inviting outdoor spaces.

This project aligns with several strategic priorities including early childhood development, after-school enrichment, as well as parks and green space enhancement. Research has shown that musical play can support physical coordination, cognitive development, creativity, and social-emotional growth.

Bringing the Project to Life

This initiative received strong community support during the planning process. Library staff worked closely with municipal leaders in the participating communities, each of whom unanimously approved resolutions of support. Community response to public presentations and outreach efforts was overwhelmingly positive.

Celebrations to Come

To celebrate the completion of this project, MCLS plans to host community events at participating library locations. Promotional signage recognizing the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation’s support will be installed at each site.
