A Special Evening with T.J. Stiles

Ellis Library & Reference Center

The Ellis Library & Reference Center welcomes two-time Pulitzer Prize and National Book award winning author T.J. Stiles for a Custer Week presentation.  Mr. Stiles received a Pulitzer Prize for his book Custer’s Trials: A Life on the Frontier of a New America.  His new biography of General George Armstrong Custer radically changes our view of the man and his turbulent times. He paints a portrait of Custer both deeply personal and sweeping in scope, proving how much of Custer’s legacy has been ignored.

T.J. Stiles is also the author of The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, Jesse James: Last Rebel of the Civil War, winner of the Ambassador Book Award and the Peter Seaborg Award for Civil War Scholarship, and a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize.

Victorian Tea with Mrs. Maggie Custer Calhoun

Monroe County Historical Museum

Living historian, Mrs. Elizabeth Schuh, will take the perspective of Mrs. Margaret Custer Calhoun, the younger sister of General Custer and share stories of an army officer’s wife during the Plains War. Light Refreshments will be served.  The cost is $10, seating is limited.  RSVP by calling the Monroe County Historical Museum at 734-240-7780.

Tour of Historic Woodland Cemetery

Author and local historian, Mr. David Ingall will be hosting tour of the Historic Woodland Cemetery in Monroe.  His tour will focus on Monroe’s pioneers, citizens, politicians and soldiers.  Thetour is free but registration is required and can be made by contacting Charmaine Wawrzyniec at 734-241-5277.

Rededication Ceremonies of the Personal Custer Guidon

Monroe County Historical Museum

Speakers will include Ms. Frances Faile, who will speak on the process she used to preserve the guidon.  Also, Mr. George Custer will speak on All the Custer Guidons giving a perspective on the importance this guidon has in history.

Reunion of War of 1812 Veterans

River Raisin National Battlefield Park Visitor Center

Foremost Custer living historian, Mr. Steve Alexander, in the perspective of Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer, will remember the Reunion of War of 1812 Veterans at 2 pm at the River Raisin National Battlefield Park Visitor Center.
